European Co-operation

The current involvement is mainly built around the county’s membership in CPMR (Conference of Peripheral Maritime Relations of Europe) and the geographical commision NSC (North Sea Commission). Both organisations promote regional development through co-operation across borders. An essential requirement for becoming a member of CPMR is that the region formally represents the political level directly under the country’s central government.

The North Norway European Office in Brussels shows that co-operation with Europe is of increasing importance to North-Norway. The office officially opened 28th April 2005.

The main owners of the office are two of the North-Norwegian county councils: Troms and Nordland. In addition, other institutions from the northern region are invited to become partners.

The European Office is meant to be a service provider to the north of Norway on current EU politics and the office will advise North-Norwegian research institutions and businesses on how to better make use of the opportunities given by the EU and EEA. The office will provide information, expertise, and assist with partner search. The main priority of the North Norway European Office in Brussels is to be a point of contact, a network institution communicating vital information back to its owners and other regional players in the north working in association with the EU and EEA networks.

The International Relations Section is a point of contact for Troms County regarding European questions, thus acting as information provider between the North Norway European Office and internal and external players.
