Vision and function

Troms County Government aims to create a better region in which to live and contributes towards the development of the High North into an attractive region and to develop Troms as a leading environmental county.
 
 
Governance

Norwegian County Councils are today part of a three level governance system:

  1. Central Government
  2. Administrative regions, County Councils (19 fylkeskommuner)
  3. Municipalities (431 kommuner)

In addition, there is a County Governor (fylkesmannen) in each county, who is the chief representative of both the monarch and the government, with a separate administration and separate responsibilities to the county council.

 

County Councils

  • are governed by elected regional politicians
  • plays a central & coordinating role in regional politics

 

County Council tasks

In developing Troms as a strong and healthy region, some of the council's tasks include:

 

  • Management of secondary education systems, continuing education and trainee programmes
  • Managenment of county roads (Troms: 1800 km)
  • Public and school transport
  • Instigation and support of business, social and economic development
  • Administration of regional project funds
  • Cultural heritage, county libraries, sports, nature & leisure activities, general public health etc.
  • Dental Health Service
