An early warning system for avalanches has been established outside the avalanche shelter at county road 868 by Pollfjelltunnelen east of the Lyngen alps in 2023.

Approximately 150 meters of avalanche exposed road is protected by the system. When an avalanche is detected at the top of Pollfjellet the road is closed. If the avalanche stops before reaching the road, the barriers will reopen, but if the avalanche hits the road, the barriers remain closed and the Road Traffic Control Center (VTS) is notified.
The entire process happens automatically.
